"Where I am from"
I am from a life filled with emotion,
From the loneliness of my mismatched race.
I am from the warmth of my brother's hug,
From the vulnerability of smooth paint on a canvas.
I am from the emptiness of my mother's absence,
From the exhaustion of my overworked heart.
I am from the pride of freshly marked pages,
From the fear of the barbed wire that pierced my skin.
I am from the adrenaline of confrontation,
From the burning joy of validation.
I am from the disappointment of my dad's aging face,
From the depression of solitude.
I am from the hatred of my bleeding knuckles,
From the skin-crawling discomfort of unorganized papers.
I am from the sympathy of my doctor's face,
From the jumping anxiety of an upcoming test.
I am from all that I have felt,
And all that I will feel.
